Fowler AA

Two engines. One pair. S/: 14728 + 14729
Built:
1918  · John Fowler & Co. Ltd.
Leeds, England

Meet the Fowler AA pair. Serials 14728 and 14729, part of the Brinck Heritage Collection, built in Leeds, England, in 1918. Two engines, built from the start to work as one system. These are cable-plowing engines, two set up on opposite edges of a field, winching a plow back and forth between them on steel cable, so neither one ever rolls over the worked ground. John Fowler perfected the system in the 1850s, and his company shipped engines like this one all over the world. This pair already crossed an ocean once, from an English farm to a preservation collection at Barleylands and this year it crossed again, restored and brought home to Iowa, running the way it did over a century ago. Fewer than 30 of these engines still exist. We’re grateful to be carrying this pair forward.
